Everything You Need To Know About Gingivitis

Dr. Bryce Reiser

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the inflammation of your gums due to the bacteria that can accumulate on your teeth and around your gums through day-to-day activities.

What causes gingivitis?

The main thing that causes gingivitis is inflammation from the bacteria that accumulate around your gums and your teeth, just from being a human.

How is gingivitis diagnosed?

As we take a look at your teeth and your gums, we're evaluating them. We're checking the pockets of them and their overall health. Depending on what we see with the exam—bleeding, inflammation, pocketing—helps us decide if you're dealing with gingivitis or not.

What can a dentist do to treat gingivitis?

Our main approach for treating gingivitis is a dental cleaning. To help take care of that bacteria, we clean your teeth, clean your gums, and remove that bacteria biofilm. By removing the bacteria, it usually removes the gingivitis.

What can I do at home to treat gingivitis?

It's usually just your normal home care. Brushing and flossing regularly will keep that biofilm and the bacteria from building up around your gums and causing inflammation.

Home care, brushing, and flossing are your main line of defense. There are also antibacterial rinses and other things we can discuss to help keep that bacterial load low.

How long does it take to cure gingivitis with a good treatment program?

With compliance from the patient, we can normally see gingivitis cured or well maintained within three weeks, sometimes earlier depending on how you're working at home and what you're working at home and what you're doing to take care of this bacteria.

When should I schedule a dental appointment if I suspect I may have gingivitis?

That's as soon as you suspect it. We always recommend having regular dental checkups and cleanings for us to evaluate your gums and your teeth and keep a close eye on any gingivitis or other inflammation in your mouth.
