Your initial appointment at Reiser Dental will usually consist of reviewing your medical and dental history, taking any necessary dental x-rays, a comprehensive examination, and an oral cancer screening with Dr. Reiser. We will review your treatment options, and then you will have your teeth thoroughly cleaned.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends getting a professional fluoride treatment at your dentist’s office every three, six, or 12 months, depending on the condition of your oral health. If you’re at high risk for cavities, your dentist may prescribe a special fluoride rinse or toothpaste to use regularly at home.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, begins by causing swelling and infection in the gum tissue, which can cause your gums to look red, feel tender, and bleed easily. As the disease progresses, it can destroy your gums and the surrounding bone tissue, which results in tooth loss. Gum disease can also harm the rest of the body by increasing your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetic complications, stroke, respiratory disease, Alzheimer’s, and pregnancy complications.

Dental x-rays have one of the lowest radiation exposure rates of all medical imaging. In addition, we always do our best to minimize exposure, only performing x-rays when necessary and always employing protective measures to minimize exposure. Our routine dental x-rays have less radiation than flying on an airplane.

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your skull to your jawbone. Dysfunction, or TMJ disorder, can lead to pain and discomfort. Jaw pain, difficulty chewing, facial pain, headaches, and clicking and locking the jaw joint are common symptoms. Common treatments include medications, TMJ splints (also known as night guards), and physical therapy. Pain related to the jaw is not normal and may be very serious.

Your safety is important to us, so we sterilize our reusable instruments in an autoclave and use disposable products as often as possible. Each of our treatment rooms is cleaned thoroughly between patient visits. We adhere to guidelines set by the CDC and OSHA and perform weekly tests on our sterilization equipment.
