What is considered a dental emergency?
There are multiple things that can be considered a dental emergency. Normally, we say pain, swelling, or something that's causing significant discomfort can be considered an emergency. We also consider broken front teeth, chips on your front teeth, or anything in your aesthetic zone that is causing concern to be a dental emergency. Your smile is a big part of how you interact with people every day, so we understand when something happens that you want to have it taken care of quickly.
When should I see an emergency dentist or go to the emergency room?
That usually depends on the severity of the issue. If you have any difficulty breathing, or swelling is starting to affect your ability to breathe or talk, we say go straight to the emergency room. There's no reason to risk that. Go right to the emergency room in case something more involved needs to be done.
If you just need a cleaning or something along those lines and there's no major pain or discomfort, we normally say to call us and schedule a regular dental exam and checkup. An emergency dentist is for situations that need more immediate attention. If you have a chipped or broken front tooth, we consider that an emergency. If you have swelling on your gums or somewhere else in your mouth that's not affecting your ability to eat, drink, or breathe, then we say, "Hey, come to us and let's take a look."

What are common types of dental emergencies?
Dental emergencies can vary across the board. They can include dental abscesses, swelling, broken teeth, pain from hot or cold temperatures, wisdom tooth pain, severe tooth sensitivity, unusual or severe bleeding from the gums, broken fillings, fractured teeth, and chipped teeth. Loose teeth and loose dental crowns can also be considered emergencies.
Pretty much anything that happens quickly and causes pain, discomfort, or a change in your mouth can potentially be a dental emergency. That being said, slow-growing issues can turn into emergencies too. When would I need an emergency dental extraction?
There are multiple reasons you could need an emergency dental extraction. You could have an accident and break a tooth to the point where it can't be restored and may need to be extracted. Certain infections can also cause significant pain and swelling and may lead to a tooth needing to be removed. There are a few different situations that can lead to an emergency tooth extraction, so we'll first evaluate the tooth and determine whether it can be saved or if extraction is the best option.
Why might I need an emergency root canal?
Normally, an emergency root canal means something is going on inside the tooth that's causing significant pain, swelling, or infection. If the nerve inside a tooth becomes severely damaged or dies, the tissue can become necrotic and an infection may develop.
Sometimes that pain or swelling gets to the point where we need to access the inside of the tooth right away. A root canal allows us to remove the infected or damaged tissue, clean the inside of the tooth, and address the source of the pain and infection.
Do you offer same-day emergency dental care?
Yes, we do, especially for dental emergencies. If you're having an emergency, call Reiser Dental right away. We'll do everything we can to get you in that day or, if our regular schedule doesn't allow for it, later that evening.
Can I schedule an after-hours emergency dental appointment?
For dental emergencies, yes. After-hours appointments are sometimes necessary. We can come into the office after hours when needed to help you take care of your emergency. I often come into the office late at night for emergencies to help patients when they need care.
Can I be seen for a dental emergency on the weekend?
Again, for dental emergencies, we're here to help. We understand that an emergency doesn't always happen during regular office hours.
